According to a recent Nielsen report, Americans are watching videos online more often. No one should be surprised that the amount of internet time Americans are spending on Social Media and online games (ie: Farmville, Pogo) is increasing. Compared to a year ago, the time spent on Social Media sites has increased from 15.8% to 22.7%. That’s a whopping 43% year over year! Meanwhile, time spent on old school internet applications like email and instant messenger services has decreased. Time spent on email is down 28%!
Online video is also accounting for more and more of American’s internet time. The amount of time Americans spend viewing online videos has increased from 3.5% to 3.9%. That’s a 12% increase from June 2009 to June 2010. We should all expect the amount of time Americans watch videos online to continue to increase as more videos are produced and more videos are embedded in social media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook.
