Most people think of games, photos and old high school friends when they think of Facebook. Slowly, Facebook is starting to climb to the top of the heap of online video rankings. On Monday, comScore released July 2010 online video rankings and to nobody’s surprise Google once again dominated in the world of online video. Google with the help of their video sharing site YouTube remained the top site for watching online video, followed by Yahoo. Google had 143.2 million unique viewers in the month, while Yahoo had 55.1 million.
The big surprise is the world’s biggest social media community, Facebook is starting to dominate when it comes to online video. Facebook had 43.3 million views in June making it the 3rd most popular site for watching online videos. Music video site, Vevo has been pushed to #5 and Microsoft has climbed to #4.
Hulu came in at #10 for the number of video views but #2 for the amount of time people spent watching videos on the sites. The average Hulu viewer watched videos for an average of 158 minutes. Google/YouTube was on top of that category also with an average of 282.7 minutes per viewer for the month.
We should expect to see the “amount of time spent watching” number increase as YouTube announced last month they have increase the allowed duration of uploaded videos to 15 minutes from 10 minutes. We can expect YouTube will also continue to expand feature length movies available for free and as rentals on their site which will also increase the average “amount of time spent watching” videos for the video sharing site.
Facebook has never made it easy to upload video directly to their site and instead most people tend to embed videos from YouTube and other video sharing sites. Don’t be surprised to see that change as they figure out how to monetize video as they have other aspects of the site.
